Computers are very useful electronics for many different purposes. Anyone can use them and benefit from them. However, excessive and improper use of a computer unit can lead to its break down. The best way to prevent this from happening is to do a regular maintenance check on your own. This way, you will ensure the life of your computer and save money on bigger problems in the future.

There are simple tasks that one can do on his own and can be automated. An example would be enabling auto-update of anti-virus and anti-spyware systems. Commercial security software usually has this option, so users can do them on their own. Make sure to set the schedule for this option to be performed on a daily basis. Then, set the schedule for full scans of all hard drives on your computer to be performed weekly. It is best to schedule a full scan during the times that you are not using your computer like early in the morning or before you go to bed.

You can also enable auto-update for your operating system. However, this may not be an option for all operating systems, so check for an application that says operating system update so your computer automatically downloads updates.

Make sure to make a backup for your important files before you log off. You can use backup management software if you have large files to backup. This software will reduce the size of the file and selectively undo major changes to files. If you are the type of person who puts their computer to sleep mode instead of shutting it down, it is advisable to turn off your unit at least once a week to allow the system to reset.

Also, run disk cleanup every once in a while to free your computer of temporary files that make the unit slow down. For some operating systems, there is cleanup tool application which people can use on their own, so you might want to check it on the one that you are using.
